«Script: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE – CHAPTERS 1- 2- 3 -4

Characters:

Mr. Bennet: Sarcastic and calm.

Mrs. Bennet: Excitable and obsessed with marriage.

Jane Bennet: The eldest daughter, kind and beautiful.

Elizabeth (Lizzy) Bennet: Intelligent and quick-witted.

Mr. Bingley: A wealthy, friendly gentleman.

Mr. Darcy: A very wealthy, but proud and cold gentleman.

Miss Bingley: Mr. Bingley’s snobbish sister.

Scene 1: The News at Longbourn
(Mr. and Mrs. Bennet are in the sitting room)

Mrs. Bennet: (Excitedly) My dear Mr. Bennet, have you heard? Netherfield Park is rented at last! A rich young man named Mr. Bingley is moving in. He has four or five thousand pounds a year!

Mr. Bennet: (Without looking up) How can that affect our daughters?

Mrs. Bennet: How can you be so annoying? I am thinking of him marrying one of them! You must visit him immediately.

Mr. Bennet: I see no reason to do that. I’ll just send a note saying he can marry whichever daughter he chooses.

Mrs. Bennet: Mr. Bennet, you love teasing me! Think of your poor daughters!

Scene 2: The Meryton Ball
(Music playing. The Bennet sisters are standing together. Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy enter.)

Mr. Bingley: (To Darcy) What a wonderful party! I have never met so many pleasant girls. Jane Bennet is the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen.

Mr. Darcy: (Coldly) You are dancing with the only beautiful girl in the room.

Mr. Bingley: But her sister Elizabeth is very pretty! Look, she is sitting right there. Let me introduce you.

Mr. Darcy: (Looking at Elizabeth for a second) She’s alright, but not beautiful enough to tempt me. I am not in the mood to dance with girls who are rejected by other men. Go back to Jane.

(Elizabeth overhears this and walks over to her friend Charlotte, smiling ironically)

Elizabeth: Can you believe him, Charlotte? He is too proud for his own good! I could easily forgive his pride, if he hadn’t insulted mine.

Scene 3: A Sick Call at Netherfield
(Jane has fallen ill after riding her horse in the rain to Netherfield. Elizabeth arrives, her dress covered in mud from walking.)

Miss Bingley: (Whispering to Darcy) Did you see her? Elizabeth Bennet looked so wild. Her hair was untidy and her dress was covered in mud! She has no manners at all.

Mr. Bingley: I thought she looked very well. I didn’t even notice the mud.

Miss Bingley: (Smirking) You noticed it, Mr. Darcy, I’m sure. Has this «adventure» affected your admiration of her fine eyes?

Mr. Darcy: Not at all. They were brightened by the exercise.

Miss Bingley: (Surprised) Oh! Well, it’s a pity they have such low connections. An uncle who is a lawyer? It must reduce their chance of marrying well.

Mr. Darcy: (Seriously) It certainly does.

Scene 4: The Realization
(Later that evening, Mr. Darcy is watching Elizabeth from across the room)

Mr. Darcy: (To himself) I first thought she wasn’t pretty. But now… she is unusually intelligent. She has beautiful dark eyes and a fine sense of humour.

Elizabeth: (Noticing him watching) Why does Mr. Darcy listen to my conversations? If he does it again, I’ll tell him I’ve noticed him!
