Scene 1: Basil’s Studio
(The studio is full of the scent of flowers. A summer wind blows through the open door. A beautiful portrait stands in the center. Basil is looking at it. Lord Henry is lying on a divan.)
Lord Henry: It’s your best work, Basil. You must send it to a gallery.
Basil: I won’t send it anywhere.
Lord Henry: Not send it anywhere? My dear fellow, why?
Basil: I can’t exhibit it. There is too much of me in it.
Lord Henry: Too much of you? The portrait doesn’t look like you at all! Who is this beautiful young man?
Basil: His name is Dorian Gray.
Lord Henry: Dorian Gray… Why didn’t you tell me?
Basil: When I like people, I never tell their names. I love secrecy.
Scene 2: Basil Explains
Lord Henry: Why won’t you exhibit his portrait? I want the real reason.
Basil: Every portrait painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter. This picture shows the secret of my soul.
Lord Henry: (laughs) And what is that secret?
Basil: Two months ago, I met Dorian Gray at Lady Brandon’s party. When I first saw him, I felt something terrible would happen in my life.
Lord Henry: How did you meet him?
Basil: I was afraid and tried to leave, but I bumped into Lady Brandon. She introduced me to him. We laughed and became friends at once.
Scene 3: Lord Henry’s Curiosity
Lord Henry: I think I’ve heard that name before. Ah yes! My aunt, Lady Agatha, told me about him. She said he is serious and kind and helps people in the East End.
Basil: I don’t want you to meet him, Henry.
Lord Henry: Why not?
Basil: Because you influence people. You will spoil him.
(The butler enters.)
Butler: Mr. Dorian Gray is in the hall, sir.
Lord Henry: (smiling) Show him in!
Basil: (worried) Dorian is my dearest friend. Don’t try to influence him.
Lord Henry: Nonsense!
(The scene ends as Dorian is about to enter.)
