Frances Hodgson Burnett

Biography

Frances Hodgson Burnett (1849–1924) was an Anglo-American author who wrote over 50 novels, famously publishing The Secret Garden in 1911. Born in industrial Manchester, England, she immigrated to the U.S. in 1865. She wrote to support her family, later dividing her time between America and England, where she was inspired to write her gardening masterpiece.

Burnett’s life was characterized by incredible reversals of fortune, beginning with a mid-Victorian childhood on the edge of the slums in Manchester. Following the death of her father, she moved with her widowed mother to Tennessee at age 15 and quickly became the family’s primary breadwinner, using her vivid imagination to write stories that spanned the Victorian and Edwardian eras.
