Obligation

We use these words to talk about rules and things we need to do.

1. Must = It is necessary. ✅

Structure: Subject + must + verb

Examples:

You must do your homework.

We must wear a helmet.

2. Mustn’t = It is not allowed. ❌

Examples:

You mustn’t run in the classroom.

We mustn’t litter.

3. Have to = It is necessary. ✅

Examples:

I have to study.

She has to clean her room.

4. Don’t have to = It is not necessary.❌

Examples:

We don’t have to go to school on Sunday.

He doesn’t have to wake up early on Saturday.

Easy Rule

Must = You need to do it.

Mustn’t = Don’t do it!

Have to = You need to do it.

Don’t have to = It’s OK if you don’t do it.
